Alopecia Hair Loss Treatment

Alopecia

Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that causes loss of hair on different parts of the body, especially the head. It is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles leading to hair loss in circular patterns. Though it does not pose a threat to one’s physical well-being, alopecia has social and psychological implications that lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression.

Alopecia can cause hair loss at any given time and in any given area. There are those who may experience hair regrowth and after some time the hair may fall off again while others may never regrow their hair at all. The condition is universal and it is a common disease that is known to affect all age groups and all classes of people. Although there is no known cure for the condition, there are treatment procedures that are available to help people with the condition to manage alopecia.

Types of Alopecia

  1. Alopecia Areata: Hair loss in small areas on the scalp or any other part of the human body.
  2. Alopecia Totalis: Total hair loss on the scalp.
  3. Alopecia Universalis: complete baldness of the scalp and all over the body.
  4. Diffuse Alopecia Areata: Hair thinning rather than patches of bald spots.
  5. Ophiasis Alopecia Areata: Baldness in the form of a ring around the head at the sides and the lower back of the scalp.
  6. Androgenetic Alopecia: It is also referred to as male or female pattern baldness and it occurs in a particular pattern.
  7. Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA): Scarring alopecia starting from the center of the scalp.
  8. Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia: Hair loss as a result of chemotherapy
  9. Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA): Frontal fibrosing alopecia that leads to baldness along the frontal hairline.
  10. Lichen Planopilaris: This Alopecia is a scarring type with patches on the sides, front and back of the scalp.
  11. Telogen Effluvium: Hair loss from a physical or psychological trigger
  12. Traction Alopecia: Hair loss from tension on the hair for a long time.
  13. Trichotillomania: Hair loss as a result of compulsive hair pulling.

Treatments for Alopecia

  • Corticosteroids: Anti-inflammatory drugs that can be given through injections, tablets or topical forms to reduce the immune system activity for hair regrowth. The side effects of the drug include increase in weight and changes in mood.
  • Minoxidil (Rogaine®): A topical treatment that is carried out on the scalp with the aim of encouraging hair growth. It normally takes approximately 12 weeks before the results are seen, however, the scalp may be prone to irritation.
  • Phototherapy: Phototherapy involves the use of ultraviolet light for hair regrowth. This can be done in addition to the medications to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment process.
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): PRP is a method of obtaining a blood sample, processing it and administering the solution obtained to the head for hair growth. Possible side effects may include scalp pain and dizziness.
  • Topical Immunotherapy: Causes an allergic reaction on the scalp to enable hair to regrowth on the head. Side effects can include scalp irritation and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Hair Styling Techniques: For those who do not respond to other therapies, wigs, hairpieces, and particular hairdos can be helpful.
