Melasma on Face

Melasma

Melasma is a skin disorder that presents as brown spots on the face, particularly on the cheek area, forehead, upper lip, and chin.

This condition is more common in women, particularly those with dark skin, and is precipitated or exacerbated by factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes (including pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives), and certain medications.

As of now, there is no cure for melasma; however, many treatments are available to minimize the appearance of this skin condition.

Topical Medications

  • Hydroquinone: This is a widely used depigmenting agent that reduces melanin synthesis in the skin. It is often used in concentrations of 2-4%. It can be used either as a single active ingredient or in combination with other active ingredients such as tretinoin and corticosteroids.
  • Tretinoin and Corticosteroids: These drugs can be used in combination with hydroquinone to enhance its depigmenting action and effectiveness.
  • Azelaic Acid: It is effective in regulating the skin cells that produce pigment and decreasing melanin output.
  • Kojic Acid: Another effective agent that assists in preventing melanin formation.
  • Topical Retinoids: These promote the effective absorption of other topical treatments and aid in the shedding of skin cells.

Chemical Peel for Melasma

Chemical peels involve applying a solution of chemicals to the skin in order to cause the skin to peel and brighten areas of melasma. The kind of peel to be used may be glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) depending on the severity of the skin condition.

A certain rehabilitation regime has to be followed, so these peels should be applied only by a specialist.

Microdermabrasion for Melasma

Chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to the skin, which causes exfoliation and helps to lighten melasma patches. Different types of peels, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or trichloroacetic acid (TCA), may be used depending on the severity of the condition. A specific rehabilitation regime must be observed, so these peels should be administered by a professional.
