Scalp Psoriasis

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long-term skin disease characterized by the overproduction of skin cells, resulting in the formation of thick, red, and silvery scales on the skin.

As of now, there is no known cure for psoriasis, but there are ways to lessen the symptoms and the occurrence of flare-ups.

The treatment plan depends on the severity of the symptoms, the severity of the condition, and the general health of the person.

Types of Psoriasis

  • Plaque Psoriasis: Reddish-brown scaly plaques, often on the scalp, elbows, and knees.
  • Guttate Psoriasis: Tiny red spots on the trunk and extremities, usually caused by infections.
  • Pustular Psoriasis: Boils on red skin, usually on the palms and soles.
  • Inverse Psoriasis: Flat, red areas in skin creases such as the groin and armpits.
  • Erythrodermic Psoriasis: Severe redness and scaling of most of the skin surface, which may be caused by sunburn or medications.

Treatments

  1. Topical treatments: These are normally used as initial treatments for mild to moderate psoriasis. They are applied directly to the affected skin and include:
    • Topical corticosteroids: These medications are useful in managing inflammation, pruritus, and erythema.
    • Topical retinoids: These derivatives of vitamin A assist in reducing the rate of skin cell division.
    • Topical calcineurin inhibitors: These drugs help prevent the overactivity of the immune system and inflammation.
    • Coal tar: It has been used for several years to treat psoriasis and helps decrease scaling, itching, and inflammation.
    • Salicylic acid: It aids in the sloughing off of the skin and helps prevent the formation of scales.
  1. Phototherapy: This treatment involves the deliberate exposure of the skin to a certain amount of natural or artificial ultraviolet light. Phototherapy includes various types:
    • Narrowband UVB therapy: The most common form of phototherapy used for psoriasis, involving a particular wavelength of UVB light.
    • PUVA (psoralen plus ultraviolet A) therapy: This involves the application of a chemical known as psoralen, followed by exposure to ultraviolet A light.
    • Excimer laser: This targeted laser therapy is used for localized psoriasis plaques, irradiating the targeted area with UVB light

Treatment Areas

  • Scalp: Sleek, scaly skin that may spread beyond the hairline, typical of scalp psoriasis.
  • Elbows and Knees: Areas usually affected by thick, scaly skin characteristic of plaque psoriasis.
  • Trunk: Small red spots or red, scaly patches on the chest, including areas with plaque psoriasis.
  • Palms and Soles: Painful boils containing pus on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
  • Folds of Skin: Velvety, red skin lesions in flexural areas such as the groin and underarms.
  • Face: Red, scaly patches around the forehead, eyes, and other facial areas, typical of facial psoriasis.
