Common Scalp Conditions
Scalp conditions can vary in their causes, symptoms, and treatments. Here are some common scalp conditions that people face:
Dandruff: Dandruff is a skin condition that involves the formation of flakes and itching on the head, particularly the scalp. It is usually a result of an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus known as Malassezia, which results in the shedding of skin cells. Dandruff can be controlled using anti-dandruff shampoos that are available without a prescription and contain ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide.
Scalp Psoriasis: Psoriasis is a long-term skin disorder that involves the scalp. It results in the buildup of skin cells at a very fast rate, thus forming thick and scaly skin on the head. Scalp psoriasis can be treated with topical steroids, vitamin D derivatives, tar preparations, or other scalp-specific medications such as calcipotriol.
Seborrheic Dermatitis: Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition manifested by inflammation of the scalp, itching, flaking, and greasy scales. This is thought to be associated with an overgrowth of Malassezia. The possible treatments may include shampoos with antifungal preparations, corticosteroids, or coal tar.
Scalp Acne: Acne can also occur on the scalp and cause the formation of pimples, pustules or cysts. Scalp acne can be controlled by washing the scalp frequently, not applying oil on the hair and by using mild shampoos. In more severe cases, the dermatologist may prescribe topical or oral medications for the acne.
Folliculitis: Folliculitis is defined as the inflammation of hair follicles due to bacterial or fungal infection. It may cause formation of red pimples on the scalp, itching and tenderness. The treatment may include topical or oral antibiotics, antifungal creams or ointments or medicated shampoos.
