A skin biopsy can diagnose conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, actinic keratosis, warts, bacterial or fungal infections, and various types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

The procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes for a shave biopsy, 20-30 minutes for a punch biopsy, and 30-60 minutes for an excisional biopsy, including preparation and post-procedure care.

Downtime is minimal. Patients can typically resume normal activities immediately after the procedure, though strenuous activities should be avoided for a day or two if stitches are involved. The biopsy site may take a few days to a couple of weeks to heal

The removed skin sample will be sent to a lab for examination under a microscope. Your dermatologist will contact you with the results and discuss any necessary follow-up or treatment.
