What is a Skin Infection?
Skin infections are diseases of the skin caused by invading microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. These infections can be found in different layers of the skin and thus present themselves in various ways.
Skin infections can cause significant discomfort, including itching, pain, and unsightly lesions, which can affect one’s confidence and quality of life. These infections, if left untreated, can spread and lead to more serious health complications.
At Emirates Dermatology and Cosmetology Center, we are dedicated to providing personalized care to help you achieve healthy, infection-free skin, ensuring you can regain your comfort and confidence.
Here are some common types of skin infections that are often identified:
Bacterial Infections
Impetigo: A skin infection that is easily transmitted and is most prevalent in kids; manifested by red skin lesions with pus that forms a scab.
Cellulitis: A skin disease commonly found in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, causing erythema, increased temperature, swelling, and pain. Cellulitis is a skin infection that may manifest signs such as erythema, edema, and tenderness and can spread to other parts of the body; it is managed with oral or intravenous antibiotics.
Folliculitis: This is a condition that happens when hair follicles are inflamed or infected, most often by bacteria. It may lead to the development of red, pimple-like skin lesions or white-headed pimples at the skin sites where hair follicles are found.
Erysipelas: A type of cellulitis that affects the skin’s outer layer and presents itself as a bright red, swollen, and sharply defined rash with fever and chills.
Boils (Furunculosis): Inflammations of hair follicles resulting in the formation of pustules on the skin accompanied by severe pain. When several boils cluster together, they create a carbuncle, which is even more painful and may cause fever.
Viral Infections
Herpes Simplex: This viral skin infection leads to cold sores or fever blisters that are small fluid-filled vesicles that appear on the lips or around the mouth.
Herpes Zoster (Shingles): A recurrence of the varicella-zoster virus that leads to a painful rash with clear fluid-filled vesicles that are generally clustered in a dermatomal distribution on one side of the body.
Molluscum Contagiosum: A viral skin infection that presents itself in the form of small, red, raised, flesh-colored bumps on the skin.
Warts: Usually caused by various strains of HPV, warts are rough skin formations that may appear on the palms, soles, or genital area.
Fungal Infections
- Ringworm (Tinea): A skin infection caused by fungi that can occur on any part of the body, with the skin being one of the most affected areas. The rash is circular, red with a raised border, and may be itchy.
- Athlete’s Foot: A fungal skin disease that mainly occurs on the feet, characterized by itching, redness, flakiness, and sometimes the formation of vesicles on the toes or the sole.
- Candidiasis: A skin condition that results from the overgrowth of yeast (Candida), especially in areas that are warm and moist like the armpits, groin, or under the breasts.
- Tinea Versicolor: A fungal skin disease that causes the formation of small areas of discoloration on the skin due to a fungal infection. These patches can be lighter or darker than the skin color and are located mainly on the chest, back, and shoulders.
- Onychomycosis: A condition that causes the nails to become thick, change color, and become brittle due to a fungal infection. It is frequently seen in toenails but may also involve the fingernails.
Parasitic Infections:
Scabies: A very communicable skin disease resulting from the invasion of small microscopic organisms called mites. It causes severe itching at night and may cause a rash and small, red, raised skin bumps.
Lice: Small insects that infest the human body, specifically the scalp, body, and pubic region. It results in itching, the presence of lice or their eggs (nits) on hair shafts, and in some cases, small red bumps or sores on the affected skin.
Leishmaniasis: A skin infection that results from the sting of a sandfly infected with the parasite. It may cause skin lesions that may turn into ulcers, usually appearing weeks to months after the bite.
